9 Must Have Android Apps That Can Actually Make Your Phone Better

Usefull apps

Your smartphone can do a lot more than make calls, send messages, and keep you busy on social media.

With the right apps, your phone can help you clean up storage, scan documents, manage passwords, study, solve math problems, find a lost device, and even read long PDFs out loud.

But there is one problem.

The Google Play Store is full of apps claiming to “boost” your phone, clean your RAM, or make everything faster. A lot of them barely do anything useful.

So instead of downloading random apps just because they promise better performance, here are 9 genuinely useful Android apps worth checking out. I’ve also added a bonus file manager at the end.

1. SD Maid 2/SE: A Real Cleanup Tool for Your Phone

There are plenty of phone-cleaning apps on the Play Store, but SD Maid 2/SE takes a different approach.

Instead of simply telling you that your phone is “optimized,” it looks at the files and folders left behind by apps and helps you decide what is actually safe to remove.

For example, you might have uninstalled an app six months ago, but some of its folders, temporary files, logs, or other leftovers could still be sitting on your phone.

That is where SD Maid 2/SE can be useful.

One of its handy features is CorpseFinder, which searches for files and folders left behind by apps you have already uninstalled.

There is also Media Squeeze, which can compress images to help free up storage without simply deleting your photos.

I also like that you can check details such as the file path and size before deleting anything. You are not just blindly pressing a giant “Clean” button and hoping for the best.

SD Maid 2/SE is open source and does not rely on traditional advertising.

Some advanced features, including Deduplicator and automatic scheduling, may require the paid version. For basic cleaning, though, the free features can already be quite useful.

What about iPhone?

iOS does not allow the same kind of system-wide cleaning apps available on Android.

Instead, iPhone users can check their storage from:

Settings → General → iPhone Storage

2. Google Lens: Your Camera Just Became a Search Tool

You know those moments when you see something but have absolutely no idea what it is?

Google Lens can help.

Point your camera at an English sign, restaurant menu, document, or other text and Lens can recognize and translate it.

Not sure what plant you are looking at? Take a picture.

Stuck on a math problem? Take a picture of that too.

You can also use Lens to search for products, identify unfamiliar objects, and perform visual searches without typing a single keyword.

That is what makes it so useful. Sometimes taking a picture is simply easier than trying to describe what you are looking at.

Watch out for fake Lens apps

There are plenty of apps using “Lens” in their names, so make sure you are installing the official Google app.

Check that the developer is Google.

On iPhone, Google Lens is available inside the Google app.

3. Gemini Notebook: A Handy Tool for PDFs and Documents

If you regularly deal with long PDFs, research papers, lecture notes, or other documents, you know how annoying it can be to find one specific piece of information.

Sometimes the answer is buried somewhere on page 47, and you have no idea where to look.

A notebook-style AI tool can make that process much easier.

Upload a supported document and ask questions about it. You can ask for a summary, look for specific information, or ask it to explain a complicated section in simpler language.

One particularly interesting feature is Audio Overview, which can turn information from your uploaded sources into an audio-style discussion.

So instead of sitting down and reading a long document, you could listen to the material while commuting, walking, or relaxing.

For students, researchers, and anyone who works with lots of documents, this can be a real time-saver.

Note: Google’s product names, features, and availability can change, so check the latest official information before publishing this section.

4. ElevenReader: Don’t Have Time to Read? Listen Instead

Sometimes you have a 20-page article or a long report you really want to read, but you simply do not have the time.

That is where ElevenReader can come in handy.

It can read PDFs, ePub files, articles, and other text aloud using natural-sounding AI voices.

The biggest advantage is pretty simple: you can listen while doing something else.

Imagine having a 30-page report read to you while driving, walking, exercising, or doing chores around the house.

Instead of waiting until you have an hour to sit down and read, you can turn some of that content into something you can listen to.

You can also check the ElevenReader web version if the app is not available in your region.

5. Adobe Scan: A Scanner in Your Pocket

Need to scan an ID, certificate, receipt, handwritten note, or some important paperwork?

You probably do not need a traditional scanner for most everyday tasks.

Adobe Scan uses your phone’s camera to capture documents and turn them into clean digital PDFs.

It can automatically detect document edges, correct perspective, and improve the appearance of scanned pages.

The built-in OCR feature is particularly useful because it can recognize text inside scanned documents.

That means a piece of paper that started out as a photo can become searchable and much easier to work with.

For everyday scanning, it is one of those apps you might not use every day, but when you need it, you will be glad you have it.

Some advanced features require a premium plan, but the free version handles many common scanning tasks.

6. Bitwarden: Remember One Password Instead of Twenty

If you are using the same password everywhere, you should probably stop doing that.

It may be convenient, but if that password gets compromised, several of your accounts could suddenly be at risk.

Bitwarden gives you a much better way to handle passwords.

It stores your passwords inside an encrypted vault, so you do not have to remember dozens of different login details.

You mainly need to remember your master password, and Bitwarden can handle the rest.

It can also autofill your login information when you sign in to websites and apps.

Another big advantage is that the free plan supports unlimited passwords and unlimited devices.

Bitwarden is also open source, which means its software can be publicly reviewed.

One important warning

Your master password is extremely important.

If you forget it, getting back into your vault may not be as simple as resetting a normal website password.

Choose a strong master password that you can remember, and keep a secure backup somewhere safe.

7. Claude: An AI Assistant You Can Actually Use

AI assistants are becoming useful for everyday tasks, and Claude is one of the apps worth having on your phone.

You can use it to write emails, create proposals, draft social media captions, translate Bengali into English, analyze images, brainstorm ideas, and much more.

You can also use voice input, which is useful when you have an idea but do not feel like typing it out.

For example, you could explain your rough idea while walking and turn it into a properly organized draft later.

Claude can be useful for students, content creators, freelancers, business owners, and pretty much anyone who regularly works with text.

Just keep in mind that free users may have usage limits, and those limits can change over time.

8. Photomath: Math Does Not Have to Be That Scary

You know that feeling when you look at a math problem and immediately regret opening the textbook?

Photomath can make things a little easier.

Point your camera at a math problem and the app can show you how to solve it step by step.

The useful part is that it does not have to stop at the final answer. For supported problems, it can break down the solution so you can understand what is happening.

It can also recognize many handwritten problems.

But there is a better way to use an app like this.

Do not just copy the answer.

Use it to understand why the answer is correct.

That way, when you are sitting in an exam without your phone, you still know how to solve the problem yourself.

9. Find Hub: Set It Up Before Your Phone Goes Missing

Nobody plans to lose their phone.

That is exactly why you should set up your phone-finding features before it happens.

Google's device-finding service is now called Find Hub. It can help you locate a lost Android device, make it ring, lock it remotely, and, if necessary, erase its data.

The important part is setting everything up beforehand.

Once your phone is already missing, it is a little late to start figuring out how the feature works.

Find Hub can also include location-sharing features for people, depending on your account and the features currently available to you.

So take a couple of minutes today and check that the relevant device-finding and location settings are enabled.

What about iPhone?

iPhone already has Apple's built-in Find My app.

Make sure Find My iPhone is enabled before you actually need it.

Bonus: Looking for a Better File Manager?

SD Maid 2/SE is great when your main goal is cleaning and organizing leftover files.

But if you simply want a lightweight file manager for browsing folders, moving files, renaming things, or managing documents, Fossify File Manager is worth a look.

It is open source, does not rely on traditional advertising, and basic file-management tasks do not require an internet connection.

Final Thoughts

You do not need 50 random apps on your phone to make it more useful.

A small collection of apps that actually solve problems is usually much better.

SD Maid 2/SE can help clean up leftover files.

Google Lens turns your camera into a visual search tool.

Gemini Notebook can make working with large documents easier.

ElevenReader lets you listen when you do not have time to read.

Adobe Scan can replace a scanner for many everyday jobs.

Bitwarden keeps your passwords organized.

Claude can help with writing, ideas, and everyday problem-solving.

Photomath can make learning math less frustrating.

And Find Hub could save you from a serious headache if your phone ever disappears.

The best part is that many of these apps have useful free features, so you do not necessarily have to pay just to get started.

One final piece of advice: do not install an app just because its name promises to make your phone “faster.”

Before installing anything, check the developer, permissions, reputation, and whether you actually need it.

Sometimes you do not need a new phone at all.

You just need the right apps.
